16 A BOOK TO REMEMBER When I heard about the book, Special Friends, by Linda Fox, I thought it was going to be about best friends at school. However, from the very first page, I understood that it was much more than that. It tells about a beautiful, different relationship between a young boy and an old woman. The main characters are Tony Miller, a 15-year-old boy, and his neighbor, 80-year-old Miss Nancy. One day, Tony hears his parents talking about Miss Nancy. They say that she can't see anymore. This worries Tony since he knows how much Miss Nancy loves to read. When he was younger, Miss Nancy was his babysitter. She loved reading books to him. They read about faraway places and interesting people. Tony wants to help Miss Nancy. He decides that now it is his turn to read to her. He starts visiting her once a week. As they spend many hours reading and talking, they Special Friends is a book recommended for people of all ages. It will make you cry and laugh at the same time. He asked himself, "Who should take my place when I die? " There were many children in his kingdom. How could he find someone he could trust? He decided to have a competition. He sent a letter and a seed to all the children. I am old. I have no children. I'm looking for the right person to be the king after me. I'm sending you each a seed that will grow into a plant. Put this seed in a pot and do your best to grow a plant. After three months, bring it to me. I will then decide who will become king when I die.

19 Ping, a 14-year-old boy,was very excited because he was good at growing plants. He put his seed into a pot and filled it with good earth. He gave it water every day and he waited for the seed to grow into a beautiful plant. Days passed,but the seed didn't grow. Ping put the seed into a bigger pot with richer earth.nothing happened. Ping continued to care for the seed. He gave it plenty of water and sunlight, but still nothing grew. After three months, all the children took their plants to the king's palace. Ping walked in with his empty pot and the other children arrived with beautiful plants. They laughed at Ping's empty pot. Ping was upset. " Why didn't my seed grow?" he wondered. When the king saw Ping he asked, "Why do you have an empty pot?" Ping answered, "I planted the seed. I did my best, but nothing grow." The king smiled and said, " I found the only honest person!" Then he explained to everyone, "Before I gave you the seeds, I cooked them, so they couldn't grow. I don't know where your plants came from! Ping will be the kong after me." 1. 21 In December 2007, Lisa Gold was on vacation in Hawaii. One night, she went swimming in the sea with her waterproof camera. The camera fell out of her hand and got lost in the waves. She could not find it anywhere. The next day she returned to the beach to keep searching; she could not find her camera. She was very disappointed because there were over 300 pictures in it. "It was my first time in Hawaii. I was upset because I lost all my pictures," she explained. Six years later, Jing, a worker for China Airlines, was walking on a beach in China collecting shells. He saw something unusual in the sand." I thought it was a strange shell," Jing said. " I was surprised it was a camera. It was very dirty and looked old. I was curious. I wanted to know what it was doing on the beach. I took it with me to try to solve the mystery." Jing got the camera fixed, and was happy to find that there were still pictures on the memory card." I knew I could find the owner by using the internet, "Jing said. His manager at the airline helped him by creating a webpage called "China Airlines is Looking for You." It included some pictures from the memory card showing a "mystery woman." Thirty-six hours later, and thousands of kilometers away, in America,Lisa`s friend saw the pictures on the Internet.She called Lisa. "Your picture is on a China Airlines webpage!" she said. Lisa got very excited and contacted the airline immediately. China Airlines gave Lisa a free ticket to travel to China to get her long-lost camera. "I was happy to see my pictures again. They brought back some wonderful memories from Hawaii," said Lisa. "It is amazing how far away my camera travelled, and how quickly the Internet helped get it back to me."
